Finger Lakes Library System to Host Open House

The Finger Lakes Library System will be hosting an Open House to celebrate the opening of our new building at 1300 Dryden, Ithaca, NY on Friday, September 25th from 3-6 PM.  All community members are welcome to attend.

During the Open House, community members will be able to tour the new building, meet the new Executive Director, Sarah Glogowski, and the rest of the Finger Lakes Library System staff, and see demonstrations of new library services such as 3D printing, Zinio (a downloadable magazine service available at all local libraries), and how local libraries are using gaming in their library programming.

The Finger Lakes Library System is a cooperative library system, chartered in 1958 by New York State, to serve the public libraries in Cayuga, Cortland, Seneca, Tioga, and Tompkins County.  Our member libraries, currently numbering 33, are independent and governed by local Board of Trustees.  One of twenty-three library systems in New York State, Finger Lakes Library System operates under a state-approved plan of service.  The System is governed by an eleven member Board of Trustees with two representatives from each of the five counties served, and one at-large member.

Public Library Systems were established in Education Law in the late 1950s by the State Legislature and Governor for the purpose of helping local libraries better serve their communities through cooperation, sharing resources, and by offering cost-effective services.  The Finger Lakes Library system helps local libraries with delivery of materials, interlibrary loan, a common catalog of library holdings, database access, funding and advocacy support, access to e-content including e-books and e-audiobooks, and continuing education opportunities for library staff and trustees.

The Finger Lakes Library System construction project began in August of 2013 when Finger Lakes acquired the building next to Treeforms in Ithaca.  During the summer of 2014, the original building was completely gutted and a new addition was constructed.  The Library System moved from our old location in the Tompkins County Public Library on January 20, 2015 to the new building.  To learn more about the Finger Lakes Library System and our services, please visit https://www.flls.org.
